About

My Felt Work

My inspiration comes mainly from my surroundings. It is very satisfying to use these ideas combined with different techniques and materials and to come to a hat, scarf, tea cozy or bag.

Although I prefer to make my own designs, I sometimes make things on request.

The seasons always inspire me; I especially love autumn time with the rich greens, browns, orange and reds.

The wool that I use is pure merino wool that has already been coloured.

Before I start I usually choose a style of hat to work on and then decided if I will incorporate fabric in it or not.

I use the Wet felting technique were you use warm soapy water on to layers of merino wool, placed at 90 degree angles to one another. Repeated agitation and compression causes the fibres to hook together into a single, strong piece of fabric.

The art of wet felting wool is centuries old and people used to make everything from tents to clothing. Felt making is still practiced by nomadic in Central Asia. Some of these are traditional items, such as the classic yurts.

I use Merino wool and Alpaca wool when creating my pieces because these materials are soft, breathable and exists of durable natural fibers.

I also quite often use Nuno felting in my work.

Nuno felting name is derived from the Japanese word “nuno” meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fibre, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a decorative and lightweight felt.
